5G-enabled Snapdragon mobile SoCs Qualcomm In his IFA keynote speech, Qualcomm President Cristiano Amon unleashed a flurry of new partner, product, and technology announcements. As expected, the announcements have a common theme as Qualcomm continues to push the rollout of 5G for new applications and the masses. A key announcement is that Qualcomm will be introducing 4-series mobile System on Chips (SoCs) in Q1 2021 with a 5G modem. This brings 5G technology down to volume-priced ($125-$250) smartphones. Qualcomm partners Oppo, Xiaomi, and Motorola, three key OEMs in this segment, will be first with smartphones leveraging the new SoCs. While details on the product are still forthcoming, Qualcomm has rapidly pushed some of the technology in its premium SoCs down to lower priced SoCs. So, the specifications are likely to include many of the features similar to the current 6- and 7-series Snapdragon mobile SoCs. As part of its commitment to bring 5G to the masses and expand the applications for 5G, Qualcomm announced a partnership with Live Nation. The partnership is working to integrate 5G millimeter wave technology into the Sport Palace in Belgium for use at events. Two of the possible uses would be to integrate virtual reality (VR) into the user experience and to give the user custom controls for audio, video, and/or information during an event. This does assume heavy usage on smartphones at events, but that doesn’t sound unreasonable if you’ve been to a concert or sporting event within the past few years. The Qualcomm Snapdragon 8cx Gen 2 5G Compute SoC Qualcomm The most exciting announcement, at least from a Tirias Research perspective, was the announcement of the new Snapdragon 8cx Gen 2 compute SoC that will power new Always-Connected PCs (ACPCs). This is Qualcomm’s second-generation Snapdragon platform designed specifically for the requirements of the PC. The specifications for 8cx Gen 2 5G build on the first generation. Like the first generation, it will be manufactured on a 7nm process and feature eight Kryo 495 CPU cores, an X24 LTE modem, eight LPDDR4x memory channels, and the Spectra 390 ISP as well as a host of advanced multimedia features. The most notable enhancements come in the form of an upgraded Hexagon 690 AI engine, and X55 5G modem, dual 4K60 monitor support, enterprise-grade security features, Qualcomm Aqstic echo-noise cancellation and noise suppression, and FastConnect 6800 Wi-Fi 6 support. According to Qualcomm, 8cx Gen 2 will deliver both performance and battery life improvements over the first generation at the same 7W TDP. The first PC announced using the 8cx Gen 2 is the Acer Spin 7, which will support both sub-6GHz and millimeter wave 5G connectivity. A truly mobile PC should have multi-day battery life and connectivity anywhere, which these products deliver. Acer Spin 7 5G ACPC featuring the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8CX Gen 2 Acer Among the other IFA announcements, Qualcomm announced Adaptive ANC (Active Noise Cancellation) technology to improve sound quality and noise cancellation for wireless ear buds. Qualcomm also announced that new wearables
